Ukraine has got its own “Business Ambassador” in Davos25 Jan 2017

In frames of the World Economic Forum in Davos, which took place on January 17-19, two Ukrainian investment-oriented events were held by the Ukrainian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (UVCA).

Every year world’s most influential representatives of global political and business environment visit Davos. Thanks to the efforts of Viktor Pinchuk team, which traditionally organizes Ukrainian breakfast, and official delegation of the President, Ukraine had been already represented at the policy level. However, Davos is exactly where people make real deals but nobody until today took the advantage of it for the benefit of Ukraine.

Davos Nights Slogan

With this idea, UVCA with partners had organized Ukrainian Davos Nights aiming on attracting investments to Ukraine. Events on January 16 and January 19 gathered more than 400 participants of the World Economic Forum: investors, entrepreneurs, media representatives to let them learn more about Ukraine’s achievements, partnership opportunities in IT and investment sectors. The main goal of these jointly organized Ukrainian business events was to position Ukraine not only as the new technological leader but also as the country where new international R&D centers are being opened and people are making successful investments.

"Ukraine has to have its “Business Ambassador” in Davos to tell the world about entrepreneurship and investment opportunities in our country. Ukrainian Davos Nights had become the real magnet for the communication on hands-on topics: which sectors and projects fit the most for global investors, what are the business patterns in Ukraine. Not surprisingly that IT sector raises particular interest, but we had also covered issues of investing in real estate, space-technology, energy and agricultural sectors"

Andrey Kolodyuk
Chairman of UVCA

To be more certain about the goals achieved at the Ukrainian Davos Nights we can point out the following:

  • Most visitors had never heard about Ukrainian achievements before, especially those we have in high-tech industry. After speaking to our Ukraine-representing community, they were openly indicating the intention to invest in Ukrainian companies jointly with local investors, members of UVCA
  • High estimate of the R&D centers of international companies which are based in Ukraine is undeniable, and as far as international entrepreneurs are looking for Ukrainian technological talents, visitors of the events have got the awareness about how to find tech-cofounders and establish company jointly with Ukrainian partners
  • UVCA has established connections with European technological programs that has offered inviting more Ukrainian companies to take part. Being aware about the high level of Ukrainian tech-products they declaring openness to investing in our startups
  • There are a lot of international investors are invited and agreed to join two upcoming investment tours (RoadShows to Ukraine), which Association organizes in May (Kyiv) and July (Odessa)

At the World Economic Forum in Davos Ukrainian delegation was proudly represented the by well-known Ukrainian investors and entrepreneurs, who had become partners of the event, applying big efforts to conducting the first-time Ukrainian business events in Davos: Olga Afanasyeva (UVCA), Andrey Kolodyuk (UVCA, AVentures Capital), Lenna Koszarny and Jaroslawa Johnson (WNISEF), Marina Vishegorodskyh (Ciklum), founder of interactive tables Dmytro Kostyk (Kodisoft). Last year WNISEF launched $5 mln fund that focuses on investing in IT startups. I participated in many IT-hackathons and competitions and was absolutely impressed by the innovativeness and ingenuity of Ukrainian entrepreneurs. By supporting UVCA’s first Ukrainian Davos Nights our Fund’s goal is to show to the world that Ukraine has many promising companies worth investing in

Davos Nights Meetup
“I am delighted to be part of the historic launch of the first Ukrainian Davos Nights held January 16 and 19, 2017 during the World Economic Forum this year. It is imperative that Ukraine’s voice be heard, that we write our own narrative and tell our own story. The emergence of IT/tech within the top 3 sectors driving Ukraine’s economic rebound must be celebrated and communicated globally. Ukraine’s talented professionals have much to be proud of with the event attracting high-level tech investors, industry players and government officials, including the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of International Trade and Mr. Dmytro Shymkiv, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine. We look forward to this event becoming an annual tradition and a highlight of WEF week in Davos!”
